Rhine River in Germany Reopens to Shipping

Rhine River in Germany Reopens...

The German Inland Navigation Authority has announced that the Rhine river has been reopened to shipping today (Wednesday January 9) following a fall in water levels.

The river was closed on Monday January 8 after persistent rainfall and melting snow led to a gradual rise in river levels in western Germany.

It was closed between the German cities of Duisburg and Koblenz, preventing sailings to and from Switzerland.

The river needs to be closed when the water reaches the critical height of 8.3 metres, as the high water means vessels would not have enough space to sail under bridges that cross the waterway.

An official told Reuters that drier weather conditions meant the water levels had dropped low enough to enable navigation to resume.
